Fiona's Forest

This is the one quest Gaspar mentions that isn't tied to a particular character, though Lucca and Robo play major roles. You'll help Fiona restore a desert to forest, witness 400 years pass in an instant, and unlock a pivotal flashback for Lucca.

Quest Overview

  • Time Periods: 12,000 B.C., 600 A.D., 1000 A.D.
  • Boss: Melphyx (5,000 + 4,800 + 1,000 HP)
  • Key Items: Green Dream, Aeonian Suit, Aeonian Helm, Speed Capsule (charm)
  • Character Focus: Robo (forest), Lucca (flashback)
  • Gaspar's Hint: "In the Middle Ages, a woman's sheer determination brings a forest back to life..."

Starting the Quest

Go to Fiona's Villa in 600 A.D. (east of Dorino). Talk to Fiona and her husband Marco - they'll explain monsters in the southern desert are preventing them from replanting the forest. Head south to the whirlpool.

Sunken Desert

First room. Fight enemies and grab the chests: Hi-Ether, Lapis, Elixir, and Aeonian Suit. Head down the stairs to the second room.

Second room. The boss appears and disappears constantly. Grab all chests before engaging: Aeonian Helm, Memory Cap, Muscle Ring, Hi-Potion, 5,000 G, Turbo Ether, and Hi-Ether. You can't leave once you start the fight, so collect everything first.

Boss: Melphyx

Melphyx

HP (Upper) 5,000
HP (Lower) 4,800
HP (Core) 1,000
Charm (Core) Speed Capsule
Location Sunken Desert

Three parts like Zombor. The Core periodically heals one of the halves for 200 HP. This can be a very tough battle if attempted early.

  • Water/Ice magic lowers defense but also raises its attack power - essential to beat it
  • Physical attacks raise its defense; physical Techs don't (use techs exclusively for damage)
  • Rage Band counters also don't raise defense
  • Charm the Speed Capsule from the Core before killing it
  • If the Core is the last piece remaining, it tries to run away - you lose most XP/TP/G
  • Kill order: Upper half first (nastiest attacks), then Core, then Lower
  • Alternative: Damage Lower before killing Core so it dies soon after
  • Once Core dies, defense raises drastically after every physical hit - dedicate someone to casting Water each round
Rewards: 2600 Exp 100 TP 2000 Gil

Melphyx's attacks: Absorbing Energy (200 damage to Core, heals a half), Blanket Bomb (heavy single target), Dark Flare (moderate all), Earthquake (low all), Laser Spin (moderate all), Sand Breath (blinds one), Tentacle (drains HP to heal itself).

After winning, return to the first room and grab the Strength Capsule on the left side (only appears after boss defeat).

Robo's 400-Year Sacrifice

Return to Fiona's Villa. She's grateful but explains replanting will take generations. Put Robo in your party and talk to Fiona again. Robo volunteers to stay behind and tend the forest for 400 years. Accept his offer and fly to 1000 A.D.

Where the desert once stood, a massive forest now thrives. Enter Fiona's Shrine to the north. The uppermost nun sells equipment:

  • Vigil Hat
  • Time Hat
  • Sight Cap
  • Memory Cap

At the top of the shrine, find Robo's battered body. He reactivates after 400 years of service. Your party camps in the forest to celebrate.

The Campfire Scene

Around the campfire, the party discusses why the gates appeared. Robo brings up a theory: the gates may not have been created by Lavos at all, but by an "Entity" wishing them to witness everything they've seen. The times and places are important to some being reliving its past - like a creature flashing back over its life.

Eventually everyone falls asleep. Put Lucca in your party before triggering this scene for what comes next.

Lucca's Past

During the night, Lucca wakes up and notices a red gate. Head right to find it - it takes you back 10 years to 990 A.D., the day her mother Lara was crippled in an accident.

Finding the password. Read the diary in Lucca's room, and the one in the back room of the house. They reveal the password is Lucca's mother's name: Lara.

Entering the password. When prompted to type the password, press the buttons one after another (not together) in a steady fast pace: L, A, R, A. If you succeed, Lara will be able to walk from now on - in both the present and the ending scenes.

If you fail, there's a different diary entry and nothing changes in the present. You can reload your save and try again until you get it right.

Rewards

Regardless of whether you save Lara, Robo waits for you outside the portal. He gives you the Green Dream accessory.
