The Queen is Gone
Marle has vanished into nothingness, and Crono couldn't do anything to stop it. Lucca arrives at Guardia Castle and explains the situation: the real Queen Leene must be found and rescued, or Marle's entire bloodline will cease to exist. Time to search for the kidnapped queen.
Preparing with Lucca
Lucca joins your party equipped with the Sight Scope. This accessory doesn't boost stats, but it displays enemy HP during battle; keep it equipped for now since knowing enemy health is useful. You can buy Lucca a Bronze Helm from the market, but skip the weapons - they're a waste of gold at this point.
Training recommendation. Before heading to the Cathedral, spend some time in Guardia Forest getting experience and Techs. Train until Lucca learns Flame Toss (around level 3), then keep fighting until Crono and Lucca unlock Flame Whirl - their first Dual Tech combining Cyclone and Flame Toss. This combo is devastating against the upcoming enemies and makes the Cathedral much easier.
Manolia Cathedral
Head west from Guardia Castle to find the Cathedral. Inside, talk to the nuns praying in the pews; they say some odd things about "killer" organ recitals. Approach the nun standing at the organ and a sparkle appears on the floor. It's a hairpin bearing Guardia's royal crest - the one Queen Leene guarded with her life according to the King.
Before you can react, the four nuns crowd around you, burst into blue flames, and reveal themselves as Nagas. This fight can be rough if you haven't trained; wait for them to group together, then hit all four with Flame Whirl or Cyclone. The Nagas inflict Slow status, so use a Heal item to cure it. At level 4-5, Crono's Cyclone can wipe them all in one hit.
After the battle, Lucca sits down to rest. A Naga appears from behind for a surprise attack - but a sword-wielding frog drops from the ceiling and kills it. This is Frog, a knight who was supposed to rescue the queen but arrived too late. He joins your party regardless of your dialogue choice. Frog comes with strong equipment and already knows Slurp, a healing Tech.
Play the organ to reveal a hidden door on the right. Before entering, you can return to town to rest if needed; otherwise push forward to the first save point.
Cathedral Dungeon
First hallway. Head left through the blue-carpeted hallway. Two chests on the left contain a Potion and Revive. Avoid or fight the Diablos, then go through the door at the end and up into the large room.
Left side exploration. Go up the left staircase and enter the first door (bottom left room). Open the three chests for a Maiden Suit, Potion, and Ether. Before leaving, check the drawer on the left to acquire the Naga-ette Bromide - a special item for a side quest that rewards a Magic Tab. Three Henches attack after you grab it; defeat them and continue.
Still on the left side, head to the very top and open the chest for the Steel Saber - equip this on Crono immediately. Go left around the spikes and hit the skull switch to lower them. Enter the door to find captured soldiers; check the left pot for a hidden Power Tab. Use it on Crono.
Right side exploration. Head back down the left stairway and cross to the right side. The lower door (southeast) has monsters sitting around; talk to all three and wait for the Diablos to leave, then follow it to the northeast room. Inside you'll find a fake King, Queen, and soldier standing around. Grab the 100G and Ether from the chests.
Enter the small alcove to the right with the Magus statue. Two chests at the north end contain the Speed Belt and Defender accessories - don't miss these. If you walk into the southernmost Diablos, you'll trigger a fight with all five enemies, and then the fake royalty reveal themselves as Vipers for another battle.
Center path. Return to the main room and head straight up the middle. You'll fight two mandatory battles: first two Gnashers and two Diablos, then two Vipers and two Nagas. Enter the door at the end to reach a save point. Rest and save, then continue up the stairs.
Circular room. Head far left to find a Shelter in a chest. This room is one giant circle; choosing a stairway turns it into a slide, forcing you around to the other side. Hit the skull switch on the right to lower the center spikes (the left switch spawns Mad Bats). Kill the Underlings and Diablos in the center, then grab the Iron Sword - equip it on Frog.
Play the organ on the left to open a secret door at the north end marked "No entry." Grab the Potion and Heal from the chests nearby. The final hallway has three pairs of enemies; you can sneak past all six by running along the left side. Use the save point before the boss room.
Boss: Yakra
Enter the room to find Queen Leene and the Chancellor at a table. Approach them and the Chancellor transforms into his true form.
Yakra
Yakra kidnapped Queen Leene and impersonated the Chancellor. He uses physical attacks including a dangerous needle spin that hits everyone.
- X-Strike (Crono + Frog) deals the most damage - about 50 more than Flame Whirl
- Flame Whirl (Crono + Lucca) works well and frees Frog to heal with Slurp
- Yakra has a counter-attack that hits everyone when damaged from far away
- Counter is avoided if attacker is close to Yakra, or if using Flame Toss/Slash (linear attacks)
- Yakra roams around, so time your attacks when he's nearby
- Keep everyone above 50 HP to survive Needle Spin
- Have Lucca defend or heal rather than attack weakly and trigger counters
Rescue and Return
After defeating Yakra, Queen Leene appears and thanks Frog. Open the right chest for a Mid-Ether and the left chest to free the real Chancellor - Yakra had stuffed him inside.
Back at the castle, Frog feels ashamed for failing to protect the queen. Approach him at the door; he compliments Crono's swordsmanship and leaves. Head upstairs to the Queen's Room where Marle suddenly reappears - the timeline is restored. Lucca reveals she knows Marle's true identity as Princess Nadia; Marle confesses and the party prepares to return home.
Going home. Head through Guardia Forest and back to Truce Canyon. New monsters appear here; fight a few battles to let Marle learn Aura and gain a level or two. Make your way north and loop around to the meadow where Crono first appeared. A small blue orb sits there; Lucca pulls out a device called the Gate Key and transforms the orb into a portal.
These portals are called Gates - holes in space that warp travelers to different time periods. Step through to return to the Millennial Fair in 1000 A.D.
