Lavos Beckons

This is your last chance to do anything in Zeal - buy weapons, complete quests, whatever you need. Once you enter the Ocean Palace, you can't go back. Head south from the first room to run into Masa and Mune, then witness a cutscene about the Mammon Machine.

Ocean Palace

Main hall. This area has eight doors branching off a central room. Five new weapons are hidden here - everyone gets one except Ayla. The Aeon Suit is in the lower-right of the main area; the Rune Blade is south of the entrance. You can avoid most Scout/Mage fights by walking along the edges, but you'll have to fight eventually to progress.

The northeast, northwest, and middle doors connect to each other. The southeast and southwest doors loop around to one another. You need to flip three switches to open the path forward.

Northeast and northwest rooms. Each contains a switch that triggers a fight with a Jinn and Barghest when pressed. These enemies are slow; if they get close together they hit the whole party for ~120 damage. Kill the Barghest first - it shields the Jinn. Normal attacks work fine.

Right middle room. Access it from the top-right room. The chest has an Aeon Helm, guarded by two Red Scouts and a Mage. Falcon Hit kills all three instantly.

Left middle room. Contains the Star Sword in a chest, guarded by a Mage and two Blue Scouts.

Southern loop. Go through the southeast or southwest doors to find the third switch. The northwest door in this area has the Shock Wave for Lucca. The room has two "islands" with Scouts on posts - walk between posts and you'll fight a Red Scout, Blue Scout, and Mage. Walk along the edges to skip the fights.

Hit the switch in the middle, then grab the chests. The Kaiser Arm is on the eastern side near the entrance. The Sonic Arrow is next to the southeast pole of the west island.

Descent. Once all three switches are flipped, a passage opens to the south in the main hall. Head through and down the stairs. Fight two Thrashers and two Mages, then continue. The next stairway has four Thrashers bouncing up and down - run into them and they'll wait at the bottom; avoid them and you skip the fight. At the bottom of the next stairs, a statue breathes fire that actually damages you. Keep moving.

Fight two Lashers and two Thrashers at the bottom of the next stairwell. Continue on to find Masa again with another cutscene. At the bottom is a save point and an optional Jinn/Barghest fight (they'll try to start it).

Elevator. Head south, fight a few enemies, then activate the elevator by selecting the left globe. You're in for a long series of fights. The first two groups fall easily to Crono's Lightning - equip the Gold Stud to speed things up. The third group is three Scouts of each color; hit them with single-target magic matching their element, or just use physical attacks. Falcon Hit handles all three.

Lower level. Step on the big switch in the room - nothing happens yet. Enter the left and right doors to flip switches and fight Scouts (you can skip past them if you're fast). Once both side switches are hit, step on the big switch to reveal a platform leading to a chest with an Elixir and a save point. Heal up.

Boss: Golem Twins

Golem Twins

HP 7,000 each
Weakness None
Charm Magic Tab (each)
Location Ocean Palace

Two Golems fight simultaneously. They copy whatever element you attack with and counter with that element. If you don't give them a new element to copy, they use a heavy generic attack on one party member.

  • Iron Orb halves HP - used at fight start and when you use physical attacks
  • Their Fire and Water counters are weak; Lightning counters hurt
  • Dish out damage, then end with Fire or Water to force weak counters
  • With Lucca: cast Hypno Wave to sleep both Golems, then focus one at a time
  • Lightning absorb trick: Equip White Plate/Vest on Crono and Robo. Use Luminaire and Shock - they'll counter with Lightning 2, which heals two party members
  • Have Ayla charm both for Magic Tabs before killing them
Rewards: 2000 Exp 4000 Gil

Dalton tries to summon the Golem Boss after the fight but chickens out - he doesn't want to risk his shot at immortality. Head down the hall.

Lavos

You stab the Mammon Machine with the Ruby Knife. It transforms into the Masamune but fails to stop the ritual. Lavos emerges.

Lavos (Ocean Palace)

HP 30,000
Weakness None
Special You are meant to lose
Location Ocean Palace

This Lavos is much stronger than the final boss version. His first attack should wipe your entire party on a normal playthrough. You don't have to win - the story continues either way.

  • First attack hits for ~700 damage - enough to kill most parties instantly
  • If you survive, he casts Chaos on everyone immediately
  • Then he needle-spins someone (900-2,300 damage, instant kill)
  • To actually win: Crono needs to be level 35+, wearing Aeon Suit, Aeon Helm, and Gold Stud
  • Use Life to revive party before Chaos hits, heal before each major attack
  • Sight Caps prevent Chaos - buy from Earthbound village after Mt. Woe crashes
  • 3D Attack (Crono/Frog/Ayla) hits 2,500-3,500 damage
  • Winning gets you The Programmer's Ending - you talk to all the dev staff at the End of Time

The Fall of Zeal

The Prophet reveals himself as Magus and attacks Lavos alone. He fails. Crono approaches Lavos to buy time for the others to escape. He's disintegrated - killed protecting his friends. Schala uses the last of her pendant's power to transport the party to safety as the Kingdom of Zeal crashes into the ocean.

Last Village. You awaken in the remains of the Earthbound village. Head into the middle hut; wait for the Nu to leave, then grab the Magic Tab where it was standing. Head to the Commons (the forest area) to confront Dalton. He steals your items, money, and equipment.

Talk to the Elder when ready.
